Many, many hosts use either Linux or one of the BSD variants. The main reason is that they are both very, very stable, and Free. Also, they both can run the Apache Web Server well, which is also Free.
Some hosts offer Windows NT or Windows 2000 hosting as well. Typically this is more expensive, since the host must purchase a Windows license. The license costs are often $750 or more, so expect to pay more for Windows hosting than you would for Linux or UNIX hosting |

| FreeBSD is considered the "king" of hosting servers. FreeBSD servers are notorious for their very big uptimes. |
