Department: Center for Behavioral and Decision Sciences in Medicine
Hours: 40 Hours, Full-Time
Shift: Days / Monday - Friday / Hours Negotiable
FLSA: Exempt
PTO: No, Medical School Vacation/Sick

The Center for Behavioral and Decision Sciences in Medicine is a joint program of the University of Michigan and the VA Ann Arbor Health System. We are a
collaborative and interdisciplinary research group that conducts basic behavioral science research designed to be applied in health care settings to improve the way people make health care decisions. We look for motivated individuals who can blend technical and social sciences expertise to further
our behavioral research. See cbdsm.org for more information.

Our web applications developer needs to have web programming skills; the ability to manage a variety of tasks surrounding web-based survey development, web-based data collection, and web-based application design; and an interest in
exploring how information technology might be able to improve both medical decision making and the functioning of our Center. For example, a CBDSM web applications developer:
* Works with investigators to implement web-based survey research projects, providing guidance on project design,
feasibility, and operational constraints. This means attending grant meetings as required throughout the design and implementation process to ensure the final product fits the investigators' standards. For larger projects, this requires creation and maintenance of a formal specification.
* Works
with the Center Director, Center Manager, and investigators to manage, maintain, and improve the Center's website, including the development of web applications.
* Writes web applications and surveys from initial conception through testing and deployment.
* Coordinates independent testing of
applications with regard to usability, functionality, data recording, and performance, consulting and revising as needed with the Center investigators.
* Pilot-tests early versions to ensure understanding and easy comprehension.
* Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation throughout each
project's lifecycle, using CBDSM's in-house project management system. For example, reasons for revisions, code bugs corrected, and content changes are all documented.
* Monitors data collection and extracts survey and other web-based data from server as needed, converts it to each investigator's
preferred format for statistical analysis, and assists in the creation of a codebook that thoroughly documents the dataset.
* Manages our external web server, which hosts Center's website, surveys, and web applications.

Several lines of Center research focus on identifying, exploring, and testing
the potential advantages of graphics and interactivity for medical decision-making. As a result, programmers with relevant skills and interest in developing such applications may have the opportunity to take on more intellectual roles in these projects. In such cases, programmers will work
closely with investigators to design the surveys, graphics, and/or interactive web applications to advance Center research.Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in computer science, a social science, communications, or a related field.
* Experience in dynamic web design, programming, and
implementation.
* Knowledge of web-based technologies; specific expertise in Ruby, Ruby on Rails, AJAX, and/or UNIX preferred but not required.
* Graphic design experience with a focus on web-based interactivity (Flash/JavaScript) and graphical presentation of large datasets a plus.
* Ability to
work independently, given general direction, on sophisticated survey research instruments and on a complex website in an academic environment. Familiarity with medical and psychological research protocols helpful.
* Willingness to work as a cooperative and productive research team member. Excellent
organizational skills.
