Located at the Imogene Powers Johnson Center for Birds and Biodiversity in the 220-acre Sapsucker Woods sanctuary, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is the world's leading resource for conservation, research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. Citizen Science is a program that involves the public in professional scientific research through the web. Current projects can be viewed on the web site. Project goals involve varying blends of research and education/outreach. Audiences range from youth to adults, families, and in some cases groups underrepresented in the sciences. Function as the designer and web developer for the Citizen Science Program at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (CLO). Work with project teams to integrate educational tools, scientific data entry interfaces, databases, and data graphing and visualization tools to present projects over the worldwide web. Use new and innovative web application tools to create web-based citizen science communities and collaborate with staff in Communications and Marketing to ensure that web presentation of citizen science projects is integrated with other web-based projects at CLO. Interact extensively with a diverse citizen science staff and obtain guidelines and design oversight from the Communications and Marketing staff to integrate the scientific, education, and marketing concerns for new and existing projects. Determine user requirements in collaboration with citizen science staff and work with evaluators to ensure the most effective use of the sites towards creating large, inclusive bird science and conservation communities via the web.
One-year term appointment with possibility of renewal based upon availability of funding.

Qualifications
Bachelor?s degree with 2-3 years experience in commercial or academic web design projects, preferably working with a web-production team. Commanding knowledge of Dreamweaver or analogous content management environment, CSS, Javascript, the DOM, Adobe Illustrator, flash, HTML, and Photoshop. Must have a thorough understanding of cross-platform browser issues and interactive web-based applications. Experience in the decision making process of web-design, and web applications: experience with QuickTime and XML. Demonstrable skills in problem solving and critical thinking. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical information in ?laymen?s terms.? Proven experience in designing websites and building application user interfaces. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team while meeting tight deadlines. Must be able to help establish realistic goals and deliver work on schedule. Must demonstrate experience writing project requirements, designing websites, and building application user interfaces. Excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with a broad range of people is essential. Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process is the norm. Must be able to exercise leadership at meetings where web design is the coordinating factor. Preferred: Well-developed illustration and artistic skills. Experience conducting training sessions as well as experience in project coordination highly desirable. An interest in birds, nature, biology, science, and/or conservation helpful. Experience with Dreamweaver/Studio and a willingness to become conversant in Plone/Zope.
