Summary of post
The Web & Data Services team manage and develop external and internal websites and business systems. This means your work will cover administering the databases that underpin our websites for trade customers, authors and individual users as well as supporting a range of business reporting tools and information systems. As a key member of the team, your primary responsibility will be to provide a highly stable and well operated database and infrastructure. You will provide senior level database administration skills; will be responsible for the smooth running of all operational procedures required for the relevant systems and will put in place robust monitoring and alerting procedures. To be successful in this role you will need to form strong working relationships with the various development and infrastructure teams, and to engage as part of the development process to ensure operational and systems management issues are factored into planning.
Key Accountabilities
§ DATABASE ADMINISTRATION: To carry out all necessary administration tasks to ensure the smooth day to day operation of the database system(s) which underlie Press websites and business systems. This will include working closely with the offshore team, the Data Architect, and other developers, to support and guide the database aspects of their software development process.
§ DATABASE SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT: Responsibility for ensuring high levels of availability for Press websites, web based business systems, and their underlying database systems. This includes managing the 24x7 on call system; developing and maintaining monitoring & alerting mechanisms; close liaison with the network infrastructure team where these responsibilities overlap; and communicating regular system availability reports to senior colleagues.
§ SYSTEMS OPERATIONS: To carry out development of, and ensure the smooth running of, the operational processes required as part of general day to day operation of the web and database systems. This to include close liaison with both in-house and offshore development teams.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
3+ years experience of Oracle database administration
A strong operational background, including a high level of programming skill in UNIX shell scripting or Perl
Experience of supporting business reporting tools and datawarehousing processes/technologies
Good organisational skills with the ability to work to deadlines with speed and accuracy
A flexible approach to work
DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Experience of administering non Oracle database systems, e.g. mySQL, MS SQL Server
Solaris administration skills
Experience of the Cognos Business Intelligence tools and related products
Ability to operate on our 24x7 on call rota
Experience of working within a publishing environment
