The Diamond synchrotron light source, located at Chilton, will consist of three accelerators - a 100 MeV linac, a 3 GeV booster synchrotron and a 562 m circumference 3 GeV storage ring - and an initial complement of 7 beamlines which will be operational for users from 2007 with an additional 15 beamlines, announced recently, to be operational by 2011. Exciting opportunities exist for two software systems engineers to participate in cutting edge research, developing software at the Diamond synchotron light source. Software Systems Engineer Photon Beamlines (x 2) Salary: £Competitive + benefits Ref. DIA0161/TH The Photon Beamline positions will work closely with a team of scientists and engineers to specify and develop software to deliver ultra stable x-ray beams from the Diamond Storage Ring to the experimental sample. These roles will work in a distributed, heterogeneous computing environment, using embedded systems running the VxWorks operating system for direct control of the hardware and Linux workstations for the operator interfaces. Most of the VxWorks applications are coded in C or built using the EPICS control system toolkit, and the Linux applications use a combination of C, Java and scripting languages. Candidates will need to demonstrate an excellent understanding of computing technology applied to realtime and distributed control applications and programming skills in C. They should have a good honours degree in physics, electronic engineering or computer science.
