The force's 70 strong Information Systems Department is recognised as one of the best technical police departments in the UK. We utilise best of breed technology from the likes of Oracle, EMC, Sun, Microsoft, Motorola, Siemens and Lotus/IBM to create a modern and robust infrastructure on which to run vital policing applications on 3,000 desktops. A number of key force-wide crime applications are built and supported by the in-house development and database administration teams. Indeed some of these systems have been procured by and implemented at other police forces. SYP are establishing a development consortium in new premises in Sheffield to continue this success. Job Description: As a senior member of the development team, you will work on our key development projects to support crime and intelligence. You will be involved in the full development and design lifecycle, and will be expected to build excellent working relationships with key system users, other developers and other IS teams within the department. You will undertake detailed systems analysis and design duties using structured methodologies and CASE tools and prepare detailed specifications according to recognised standards. You will also produce test specifications and train testers in the usage of new software products, as well as produce training guides and assist in the development of training courses for force-wide computer systems. The role will involve travel throughout the force area and on occasion, to other forces, special interest groups, and supplier locations nationwide. Candidate Specification: With at least five years demonstrable experience in a similar role, you will be educated to Degree level or equivalent, with experience of technical supervision of staff. You will have knowledge of structured analysis and design methodologies, client server architecture, with a sound working knowledge of Oracle RDBMS and the Oracle product toolset (Designer/Developer 2000, Forms, Reports and PL/SQL). Any experience in web deployment using Oracle 9IAS, CQCS version 7 or above, Lotus Domino, Java J2EE, or IEEE documentation standards a distinct advantage, as are; Oracle in a Unix and Windows environment, automated testing tools and software configuration management.
